[Biography]

Sangpo Dorjee was born in 1964 in a small village near Pureng in Western Tibet. In early 1970’s he fled Tibet with his family to India where his family settled in the Tibetan settlement of Mungod in southern India.

Dorjee enrolled as a student of traditional Tibetan Thanka painting under the supervision of noted Tibetan thangka artist master Sangye Yeshi (late) at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives. After finishing his course in Thangka painting he remained at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives for a few years practicing the ancient Tibetan art.

In 1989, he was invited to France by the Foundation Alexandra David-Neel to restore its ancient Thangkas. He also worked in creating new Thangkas and traditional Tibetan drawings for the foundation. In early 2000, he devoted himself to the preservation of the Tibetan culture and art by starting a shop of Tibetan Art and crafts in Paris, and by organizing events including exhibits and fairs on Tibet and Himalayas. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, creating exhibitions, festivals, concerts etc. Today, he is in search for new and emerging Tibetan artists, contemporary or traditional in various fields including painting, sculpture, calligraphy, etc.
